Amazon blocks Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping

Published · Updated

Amazon blocked Meta's Muse personal AI agent from browsing and purchasing products on Amazon.com. The dispute is an early example of a practical limit facing agents that can research the web, use apps, and carry out tasks for a person.

How Muse looks things up and completes tasks

Meta says Muse runs in a dedicated secure virtual machine with its own browser. With access chosen by the user, it can work across the web and everyday apps. Meta describes tasks such as web research, email and calendar work, shopping, travel booking, appointment planning, forms, and longer projects that require several coordinated steps.

That browser-based approach also means Muse depends on each website's access rules, login flow, automation policy, and willingness to let an outside agent act for a customer.

What Amazon blocked

Reporting from Axios says Amazon prevented Muse from browsing and buying products on its platform. Amazon's stated position was that third-party purchasing applications should identify themselves, operate openly, and respect a provider's decision about participation. This page found no reliable report that the other retailers named by Meta had specifically banned Muse, so Amazon is the only confirmed Muse-specific block listed here.

Tasks a human can take over when Muse gets stuck

  • Compare a requested product across retailers that permit access.
  • Check price, stock, shipping dates, warranty terms, and return policies.
  • Call or email a seller to verify product details or a special request.
  • Prepare a decision-ready shortlist when Muse cannot browse a store.
  • Review the final item, total, shipping address, and terms before an authorized checkout.
  • Help coordinate travel, dining, or appointments that require a phone call.
  • Organize forms and attachments for the user to review and submit.
  • Pause for the user to complete a CAPTCHA, login, two-factor check, or identity verification.

Human help should respect the retailer's rules and the user's authority. It should not be used to disguise an agent, evade a site block, or make a purchase without informed approval.
